Principles of Audio Production

About This Course

This course introduces principles and tools of audio recording technology, beginning with the physics and terminology of sound. Through lectures and demonstrations of acoustics, microphones, analog and digital recording, signal processing, MIDI and synchronization, you’ll understand the elements of sound production. You’ll also get an overview on how to record sound at a specific location that isn’t a studio space during a location sound for film and video workshop.

The instructor and guest speakers will provide insight into how a sound project for music, video and film is brought together. The instructor will demonstrate how project plans are developed and priced, as well as the basics of mixing, storage media and the mastering process. We’ll also cover environmental sustainability issues related to storage media (digital vs. tape).

Past guest speakers have included Scott Colburn, music producer and sounds designer; Rachael Field, mastering engineer and owner at Resonant Mastering; and Maria Elisa Ayerbe, CEO and audio engineer at South Mountain Media.
