About This Course

Museums — why do we have them and what is their function in society? What sort of institutions fall under the definition of a museum? What does it mean to work in a museum? Museum studies encompasses interdisciplinary ideas and capabilities required of a museum professional, from the practical skills needed to operate a museum to theories on the societal role of museums.

In this foundational course, we’ll delve into the roles of museums in society, organizational structures and visitor strategies. We’ll also cover aspects of museum advocacy and sustainability practices. You’ll learn through lectures and guest speakers, in-class discussions and activities, readings, writing assignments and museum visit. This course is ideal for those seeking a broad understanding of museum operations and societal impact.

  • How museums preserve and present colonial history while applying principles of decolonization and diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI) to their structure and leadership
