GIS in Practice in the Pacific Northwest

About This Course

This course explores GIS applications across a range of professional fields, primarily in the Pacific Northwest region, in association with expert guest speakers who join class sessions for presentations and discussions. We'll examine real-world issues that GIS professionals face in a variety of fields, such as natural resource management, urban planning, public safety, utility operations, mass transit support and disaster management. Hands-on sessions with student group projects are designed to help you understand and realize the goal of GIS project completion and presentation. Project teams receive instruction and coaching on visualization, analytical summaries and report generation. We’ll also cover future directions in the GIS industry, and you'll get insights and advice on GIS professional careers.

What You'll Learn

  • Insights from guest speakers about the GIS profession, conducting GIS projects, solving practical problems, professional development and career advancement strategies, including how to build a professional contact and support network
  • How to identify jobs and job titles that exist within the GIS profession and connect them with the skills they require
  • Ability to follow a structured and repeatable approach to conducting GIS projects 
  • How to complete your student group project and present the results in a structured presentation 
  • Development of a GIS architecture based on an organization's needs
