About This Course

This course introduces formal project management techniques and explores their application in biotechnology and pharmaceutical projects. You’ll learn foundational project management skills for planning and executing complex scientific projects. The course also provides an overview of how project management functions within biotechnology organizations. Through biotechnology and pharmaceutical case studies, you’ll examine the project life cycle and the skills, tasks and challenges associated with each stage.

  • Methods for defining project scope and writing a project charter
  • How to determine the critical path of a project
  • Different types of organizational structures and how they influence project management
  • How to develop a sample project plan that includes timeline, task definitions, cost estimates, task dependencies, staffing and resource allocation
  • Ways to use project scheduling and collaboration tools such as Smartsheet

Students are required to either attend lectures in real time on Saturdays from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. (Pacific Time) or watch the recorded sessions at a later time. Optional office hours are held on Saturdays from 12–1 p.m. (Pacific Time).
