About This Course

Well-crafted, powerful fiction never falls out of fashion. Whether you want to write like the greats of the past, emulate the best authors of today or forge your own unique style, you’ll need to learn how writing great fiction works from the inside out.

In this course, you’ll learn the key elements of storytelling craft. We’ll explore the foundations of American literary themes and how other genres emerge from the convention of realism. You’ll learn to establish your story with an inciting incident, then amplify tension and drama through stages of conflict and dialogue as you steer your characters toward believable reversals. Along the way, you’ll learn techniques to add sensory details, create atmosphere, build setting, control mood, and make your prose come alive.
